how to make a fishing rod

how to make a fishing rod
Making a fishing rod is not nearly as daunting a challenge as it would first seem. Fishing rods may be elaborate or very simple and require enormous skill or a few simple materials and tools. Making a fishing rod is a project that can easily be accomplished in a relatively short amount of time and can even make a great family or kids' project.

  1. Choose a length of cane with a grip end of 1 1/2 to 2 inches in diameter and good taper to at least 1/2 to 1/4 inch at the opposite end. Most fishing rods of this type will need to be at least 7 feet long. You can find cane growing alongside creeks, streams and rivers or you can buy it from home stores or landscape suppliers.
  2. Use the saw to remove any rough or unwanted material from the ends of the rod. Use this as an opportunity to clean up the rod as well as adjust the overall length.
  3. Remove any rough spots, shoots or limbs from the rod with the knife. A sharp pocket knife will suffice for this.
  4. Use the knife to cut a small V notch in the rod about 1 to 2 inches from the tip end of the rod. This will provide a secure place where the fishing line may be attached. Tie the length of line to the rod using a double overhand knot.
